Acne is an inflammation disorder of the skin which leads to pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. It can affect people of all ages, but acne outbreaks peak at 16 through 18 years of age. Approximately 4 billion dollars are spent each year to treat this most common skin disease, and the desire for prevention is great.
Many dermatologists and medical researchers are reaching the conclusion that there is a correlation between dairy consumption and acne outbreaks, and that avoiding dairy can help stop acne. In one study published in the May 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, teenaged boys with the greatest milk intake had the most severe acne problems. And in the Nurses II study, a group of women who drank 3 cups of milk daily were 22% more likely to exhibit severe acne than was a group who drank 1 cup of milk daily.
Most people are unaware that 75-90% of milk comes from pregnant cows. Along with the milk, consumers are also ingesting the pregnancy hormones naturally present in the cow’s milk. To increase milk production, farmers often give hormones to their cows, which further increases the hormone content of the milk. These hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands and lead to excessively oily skin which is more prone to blockages and acne outbreaks.
Omitting dairy from the diet can help stop acne. When the excessive hormones are no longer present, oil production will be reduced and skin eruptions will decrease or cease altogether.
Specific foods to avoid on a dairy-free diet are: milk, cheeses, whey, ice cream, yogurt, butter, and prepared foods containing these items. Alternatives to dairy products include: fortified soy, nut, or almond milk, tofu, oysters, sardines, kale, and fortified orange juice. Individuals on a dairy-free diet should take care to insure adequate calcium intake by using a calcium supplement.
